Take-home Exercise 2: Be Tradewise or Otherwise
Overview
Since Mr. Donald Trump took office as the President of the United States on January 20, 2025, one of the most closely watched topics has been global trade.
As a visual analytics novice, you are eager to apply newly acquired techniques to explore and analyze the changing trends and patterns of Singapore’s international trade since 2015.
The Task
In this take-home exercise, you are required to:
- download Merchandise Trade by Region/Market from Department of Statistics Singapore, DOS website,
- select three data visualisation on this page, comments on the pros and cons and provide sketches of the make-over,
- using appropriate ggplot2 and others packages create the make-over of the three data visualisation critic above, and
- analyse the data with either time-series analysis or time-series forecasting methods by compliment the analysis with appropriate data visualisation methods and R packages.
Submission Instructions
This is an individual assignment. You are required to work on the take-home exercises and prepare submission individually.
The specific submission instructions are as follows:
- The analytical visualisation must be prepared by using R and appropriate R packages.
- The write-up of the take-home exercise must be in Quarto html document format and publish on Netlify.
- The write-up of the submission should consist of the followings:
- detail description the data extraction and data preparation process,
- critics on the three selected data visualisation and the make-over design. Not more than 250 words per data visualisation, and
- describe the time-series analysis and visualisation methods and the analysis results. Not more that 500 words.

Your completed take-home exercise is due on 9th March 2024, by 11:59pm (Sunday mid-night).
